God's Other Ways

HEARING THE VOICE OF GOD

How does God talk with people? How do you hear the voice of God? Through His Word, other people, circumstances? And what if He speaks through a whispered word? What then?

When God Whispers

The man whispered, "God, speak to me," and a meadowlark sang. But, the man did not hear.

So the man yelled, "God, speak to me," and the thunder rolled across the sky. But the man did not listen.

The man looked around and said, "God, let me see you." And a star shined brightly. But the man did not see.

And the man shouted, "God, show me a miracle." And a life was born. But the man did not notice.

So, the man cried out in despair, "Touch me, God, and let me know you are here.” Whereupon, God reached down and touched the man. But the man brushed the butterfly away and walked on.

How God Speaks

God speaks through His Word…Scripture…The Bible. "For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires."  - Hebrews 4:12 NLT

God speaks through circumstances; such as Jonah, who failed to heed God's direction and found himself in the belly of a whale. Now the Lord had arranged for a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights. - Jonah 1:17 NLT

God speaks through people…a word that is more than a passing conversation…direct words that confirm his direction. “Then David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly: “O Lord, the God of our ancestor Israel, may you be praised forever and ever!  - 1 Chronicles 29:10 NLT

God also speaks through wise counselors. Proverbs repeatedly says to seek wisdom through the counsel of others. "Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.” - Proverbs 4:1-2 NIV

God speaks through dreams and visions. “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.”  - Joel 2:28 NIV

God speaks through our thoughts. "He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind, and who reveals His thoughts to mankind, who turns dawn to darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth, the Lord God Almighty is His name."  - Amos 4:13 NIV

God speaks through nature. "Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” - Romans 1:19-20 NIV

God speaks supernaturally. "There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up." - Exodus 3:2 NIV

And God speaks through whispers. "After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?'“ - 1 King 19:12-13 NIV
