A FOURTH OF JULY PRAYER

Sovereign Lord, we lift up our nation to You. You have blessed us and established us since the beginning. You have been our shield and our covering of protection. You have made us a great nation on this earth.

Our forefathers honored You in historical documents, solemn oaths and in courtrooms. Songs have been written proclaiming Your glory in our beautiful land. Your precepts have been the very foundation this country was built on. You have been our might, our justice, our freedom and our victory.

We bow our knees and our hearts in thanksgiving to You for preserving us. We also bow with contrite hearts for not giving You the honor and praise You are due. For not walking in Your ways. Forgive us, Lord. Have mercy on us, most merciful Father. We have sinned, committed iniquity, acted wickedly, and rebelled, even turning aside from Your commandments and ordinances.  (Daniel 9:5)

We lift up all who are in office in this country, all who are in positions of authority, and pray that You would protect them and give them wisdom, knowledge and acute discernment for the jobs that they hold. We lift up our military, our intelligence agencies and all who are in law enforcement and pray Your protection over them. Establish their steps, Lord. Strengthen them and equip them. Bless them and their families.

Father, You alone are our hope and our future. Turn the hearts of Americans toward You.  In Jesus' name, Amen.

Below are some quotes and petitions from the past…

“Do not let anyone claim tribute of American patriotism if they even attempt to remove religion from politics.” — George Washington’s Farewell Address to the Nation

“It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.” - George Washington

America was established not to create wealth but to realize a vision, to realize an ideal—to discover and maintain liberty among men.” - Woodrow Wilson

“It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians, not on religion, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” - Patrick Henry

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” - Edmund Burke

We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that ‘except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that build it.’  I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel. - Benjamin Franklin (from the debates at the Constitutional Convention, June, 1787)

“The U.S. Constitution doesn’t guarantee happiness, only the pursuit of it. You have to catch up with it yourself.” - Benjamin Franklin

“We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Our constitution was made for a moral and religious people…it is wholly inadequate to the government of any other…”  - John Quincy Adams

“Freedom is the last, best hope of earth.” - Abraham Lincoln

Every generation of Americans needs to know that freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.”  - Pope John Paul II

The choice before us is plain:  Christ or chaos, conviction or compromise, discipline or disintegration. I am rather tired of hearing about our rights and privileges as American citizens. The time is come—it is now—when we ought to hear about the duties and responsibilities of our citizenship.  America’s future depends upon her accepting and demonstrating God’s government.”  - Peter Marshall

“America today is running on the momentum of a goodly ancestry, and when that momentum runs down, God help America.”  - General Omar Bradley

“We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount. The world has achieved brilliance without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants.”  - General Omar Bradley

“I believe this blessed land was set apart in a very special way, a country created by men and women who came here not in the search of gold, but in search of God. They would be free people, living under the law with faith in their Maker and their future.” - Ronald Reagan

“Our liberty springs from and depends upon an abiding faith in God.” - Ronald Reagan

The truth is, politics and morality are inseparable, and as morality’s foundation is religion, religion and politics are necessarily related. We need religion as a guide.” -  Ronald Reagan

“If we lived by the Golden Rule, there would be no need for other laws.” - Ronald Reagan

MAY GOD’S WILL BE DONE IN OUR NATION

Lord… remind us today that You have shown us what is good in what You require of us; to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God. We ask that as a people, we may humble ourselves before You and seek Your will for our lives and for this great nation. Help us in our nation to work as never before to strengthen our families and to give our children hope and a moral foundation for the future. So may our desire be to serve You, and in so doing, serve one another. This we pray in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. - Billy Graham
