IS IT BLACK OR WHITE?

One day two boys in elementary school, Jack and Bobby, got into a major argument with one another.

When they get older, they may forget what their disagreement was about…but, it’s very likely they will never forget the lesson they learned from their teacher that day.

Jack was convinced that he was right and Bobby was wrong. And, Bobby was just as convinced that Jack was wrong and he was right. The teacher decided to teach the boys a very important lesson.

She brought them up to the front of the class and placed Jack on one side of her desk and Bobby on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large, round object. Jack could clearly see that it was colored black.

She asked Bobby what color the object was. He answered, “White”.

Jack couldn’t believe Bobby said the object was white, when it was obviously black!

Another argument started between the two classmates, this time about the color of the object.

The teacher told Jack to go stand where Bobby was standing and told Bobby to stand where Jack had been. The boys changed places, and now she asked Jack what the color of the object was…he had to answer, “White.”

The object on the desk had two differently colored sides… and from Bobby’s viewpoint it was white. Only from Jack’s side was it black.

Sometimes we need to look at the problem from the other person’s view in order to truly understand his/her perspective.
